“UTZ CERTIFIED” AND WHAT IT MEANS?

 As of late 2007, the UTZ Certified program has now been recognized as the world’s largest coffee certification.  The word “UTZ” in the Maya language means “Good”.  To be UTZ certified ensures coffee producers that they will have access to the tools required for improvement in such areas as protection of labour rights, standards for record keeping, education in minimized use of any agrochemicals, and access to proper health care and education for the employees and their families.  Coffee farmers are also given assistance and support when it comes to marketing (negotiating better terms of trade, developing long-term relationships, lowering costs while increasing yields).  UTZ Certified is a market driven system based on supply and demand, which means there is no minimum price or guaranteed premium which allows farmers to negotiate a fair price for their product.

To the consumer, an UTZ Certified coffee means you are being assured that this product has been produced with concern for people and the environment.  It gives you knowledge and piece of mind that your coffee comes to you with social and environmental responsibility.
